Selv om NASCARs første sanksjonerte løp inneholdt modifiserte kuponger fra før-årgang - med opphissede motorer, stivne suspensjoner og opplyste kropper - ble Strictly Stock-divisjonen som debuterte i 1949 raskt hovedattraksjonen og utviklet seg til slutt til dagens NASCAR NEXTEL Cup-serie.
